The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Announce a Fresh Divinity, Declaring it Their Most Ambitious RPG Yet

The speculation about this year's gaming ceremony has been intense, especially after host Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling image of a strange statue. The mystery has now been solved. Larian Studios is working on a completely new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer that included striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal descent into chaos.

A Different Direction

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.

That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This choice of words implies that the team might be building a more action-oriented experience instead of another turn-based title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it sparked the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, player agency, and flexible progression—traits that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is traditional swords and sorcery, what truly sets Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is brimming with specialized paths you can achieve with a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.

The series is also famously permissive, allowing players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be completed in multiple ways, often in surprising fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you remembered something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.

More to Come

It is these creative systems that allow people to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can anticipate another adventure in this legendary franchise.
